Canal Winchester: Old Village, New Driveways
Canal Winchester got its start when the Ohio and Erie Canal was built through Reuben Dove's wheat field, and the village was platted in 1828. Asphalt paving in Canal Winchester still reflects that history: an old downtown laid out in the canal years, and newer neighborhoods spread across what used to be farmland. The city covers 7.61 square miles, including 0.14 square miles of water. We replace and resurface driveways, patch and seal asphalt, and pave and stripe small business lots here.
Downtown and the older streets
The first canal boat floated through Winchester in 1831, carrying passengers, freight and grain. Homes and shops on the oldest streets often have short, narrow driveways, gravel or asphalt alleys, and small rear lots. We use compact equipment where access is tight, keep clean edges against old brick and curbs, and pay close attention to drainage, since older lots were not graded with modern driveways in mind.
Former farmland
Neighborhoods built on flat former fields share a common problem: water has nowhere obvious to go. A driveway with too little slope holds puddles, and each freeze widens the cracks they sit in. When we replace or resurface, we set a consistent slope to the street or yard so water drains away instead of soaking into the base.
Rural edges and long drives
Canal Winchester's edges still include rural roads and country homes with long driveways, some of them gravel. Converting a gravel drive to asphalt is a common request. It starts with grading and compacting the existing stone, adding new stone where the base is thin, and then paving. We also build firm shoulders so the edges do not crumble under tires.
The area's rural past shows in its landmarks too. The Bergstresser Bridge here is the only standing wooden covered bridge in Franklin County.

Driveways on county roads
Homes just outside the city on the Franklin County side often front county or township roads. The Franklin County Engineer's residential driveway permit covers work in the county road right-of-way. Its 2021 form calls for at least 32 feet of 12-inch reinforced concrete or HP plastic pipe as drive tile, and on roads without concrete curb the apron starts with 3 feet of asphalt at the road edge, with the rest matching the driveway material. The permit expires 30 days after it is issued unless work has started, and the holder must call the day before work begins.
Inside city limits, the city's own rules apply. Either way, we confirm which agency has the road in front of your house and get the right permit before we schedule. Call (614) 963-2681 to book a free estimate.

Canal Winchester Questions
Can you turn my gravel driveway into asphalt?
Yes. We regrade and compact the existing stone, add new stone where the base is thin, then pave and firm up the edges.
Do you work on narrow downtown lots?
Yes. We bring smaller equipment for tight access and keep the edges neat against older brick and curbs.
Why does water sit on my driveway?
On flat former farmland, many driveways were set with too little slope. We correct the grade during replacement or resurfacing.
Do I need a permit for a driveway on a county road?
Yes. The Franklin County Engineer issues a residential driveway permit for work in the county road right-of-way, with drive tile and apron requirements. We confirm which agency has your road and get the right permit.
