Pataskala's Mix of Country and Subdivision

Pataskala was a small community until 1996, when the village merged with Lima Township and greatly expanded its area, and asphalt paving here reflects that merger. The city now covers 28.72 square miles, of which only 0.10 square miles is water. Inside those limits are an old village center, newer subdivisions and a lot of rural land with long driveways off township-style roads. We pave new driveways, convert gravel to asphalt, resurface, repair, sealcoat, and pave small business lots in Pataskala.

Long country driveways

A rural driveway that runs a long way from the road to the house faces problems a short subdivision drive never sees. Water runs along its length, the edges get no support from curbs, and heavy vehicles like propane trucks or farm equipment may use it. We build these drives with a well-compacted stone base, a crown or cross slope so water sheds to the sides, and firm shoulders so the edges hold up. Where the drive crosses a ditch, we check that the culvert is clear and sized well enough that water will not top the pavement in a storm.

Gravel to asphalt

Many Pataskala homes started with gravel driveways. Converting one to asphalt is usually straightforward if the existing stone is reshaped, topped up where it is thin and compacted before paving. The result is a drive that does not rut, kicks up no dust and is easier to plow. We will tell you during the estimate whether your existing gravel can serve as the base or needs more work.

Subdivision driveways

In the neighborhoods built since the merger, driveways are mostly in their first or second decade. That is the right time for crack filling and sealcoating. A little maintenance keeps water out of the base and pushes off resurfacing for years.

Along the South Fork of the Licking River

Multiple parks sit along the South Fork of the Licking River, across 127 acres of parkland in seven parks. The largest, Thomas J. Evans Foundation Park, covers 78 acres, 22 of them wooded. Properties near the river and its low ground tend to stay wetter, which softens the soil under a driveway. On those lots we dig deeper to find firm ground, may add a separation fabric and compact the base in layers.

Pataskala Questions

Can my existing gravel be used as the base for asphalt?

Often, yes. If the stone is deep enough and well graded, we reshape it, add stone where it is thin and compact it before paving. We check it during the estimate.

How do you keep a long rural driveway from breaking at the edges?

We build firm, compacted shoulders, shape the surface to shed water to the sides and make sure ditch crossings drain properly.

Do you sealcoat subdivision driveways in Pataskala?

Yes. Crack filling and sealcoating every few years is the best way to extend the life of a newer driveway.
