A Creek Town's Driveways and Lots
Gahanna takes its name from a Native American word for three creeks joining into one, and it was once the name of Big Walnut Creek itself. John Clark founded the town along the creek in 1849 on 800 acres his father had bought in 1814. Asphalt paving in Gahanna still works around that creek: low ground near the water, older lots in Olde Gahanna, and later neighborhoods on higher land. We replace and resurface driveways, repair potholes and broken edges, sealcoat, and pave and stripe lots for Gahanna businesses.
Low ground and a soft base
Where a driveway sits close to the creek or in a low part of a lot, the soil under it stays wetter longer. Wet soil is weak soil. Under the weight of cars it lets the stone base push down into it, and the asphalt above sags and cracks. On these driveways we dig out until we reach firm material, may use a separation fabric so the stone does not mix with the soil, and compact the new base in layers. Getting the base right on low ground is the difference between a driveway that lasts and one that needs patching in a few years.
Olde Gahanna and the creekside
A redevelopment and park extension project along the creek in Olde Gahanna began in October 2004, bringing new life to the historic core. Older homes and small businesses there often have short driveways, shared access or compact lots behind the building. These jobs call for small equipment, careful edges against brick and sidewalks, and clear plans for where water will go once the new surface is down.
From landfill to Central Park
The 200-acre Bedford I Landfill was closed, cleaned up and turned into Central Park of Gahanna, completed in late 2007. It is a good local example of how much ground preparation matters before anything is built on top. The same idea applies on a much smaller scale to a driveway: the surface is only as good as what is under it.

Gahanna Questions
My Gahanna driveway sinks near the bottom of the lot. What causes that?
Usually wet, soft soil under the base. We dig to firm material, separate the stone from the soil where needed and compact a new base before repaving.
Can you work on tight lots in Olde Gahanna?
Yes. We use smaller equipment where access is limited and plan edges carefully against brick, walks and buildings.
How often should I sealcoat?
Most residential driveways do well with sealcoating every few years, plus crack filling before winter. We can look at yours and suggest a schedule.
