Worthington: An Old Town Plan, Modern Driveways
Worthington is one of the oldest planned towns in central Ohio, and asphalt paving here works within a layout that dates to the first years of statehood. In 1802 the Scioto Company bought 16,000 acres along the Whetstone River, now the Olentangy, at $1.50 an acre. By December 1803 the village had 160 lots of three-quarters of an acre each, set around a 5-acre public green. Today the city covers 5.63 square miles and, together with Riverlea, forms an enclave surrounded by Columbus. We replace and resurface driveways, repair and sealcoat asphalt, and handle lots for local businesses and institutions.
A built-out city means replacement, not new construction
Because Worthington is surrounded and mostly built out, almost all of our work here is on existing pavement. Many driveways have been resurfaced more than once. Before adding another layer, we check how thick the old asphalt already is and whether the surface now sits too high against the garage slab, the sidewalk or the street. Sometimes the right answer is to mill or remove the old layers and start fresh on a repaired base.
Historic streets near the green
The blocks around the original village green have older homes where the driveway is part of the street view. Narrow drives, detached garages at the back of the lot and shared access are common. We keep the work neat at the edges, protect nearby brick, stone and landscaping, and finish the apron cleanly where it meets the street.
Near the Olentangy
The Olentangy River runs along the city's west side. Lots that slope toward the river shed water quickly, and that water can undercut driveway edges or the downhill end of a drive. On those properties we build a firm edge, compact the base well and look at whether a small swale or drain would keep runoff off the pavement.
Old trees and cleared forest
When the village was founded, a work party of seven hired laborers began clearing the forest in 1803. Two centuries later, many lots have large trees whose roots push up asphalt. We cut out root-damaged sections and rebuild them, and we plan equipment access to avoid harming trees you want to keep.

Worthington Questions
Can you just add another layer to my Worthington driveway?
Sometimes. If the old asphalt is already thick or sits high against the garage or walk, we recommend removing or milling it first so the new surface sits at the right height.
Do you work near historic homes?
Yes. We keep edges neat, protect brick, stone and plantings, and finish the apron cleanly at the street.
Why do my driveway edges crumble on the side facing the river?
Runoff on sloped lots can wash out the base along the edge. We rebuild with a firm, compacted edge and redirect water where we can.
